That sounds like a really wonderful way to welcome the new year. I am impressed by the energetic walk that took place (and by the photos of the tired tiny ones). The food table looked delicious. And Ruby ate crab legs? Wow... she is more daring than I am.
Happy new year to you all.

Wow... this is a great post Simon. It really captures the mood there. 2 years is a long time; I suppose that can be seen by the Capp family's new friends, new habits and new things.
All the very best in the pack up (which is always the worst part of any trip). Although you're leaving behind such a lot, Melbourne is ready for you to return.

You don't need to make excuses mate. You came, you saw, you conquered (mud). I also felt like "I wish I had come sooner" when I first came!

The main thing is, you came! Thanks to you and for your wife for letting you come :D

Simon Simon Simon - how can we both be from Melbourne and never have met (well, I guess, you are rarely here...!)? We are obviously very much on the same wavelength and I only just found out about you, and your adventures with your family yesterday! After years of wanting to, and being turned off by how hard it was to get the necessary documentation, I am about to embark on an Italian adventure, similar to yours, with my partner and 3 daughters, aged 12, 8 & 5! I really want to read your book - so many of the things you mention on your site are almost word for word, what we have experienced so far! I have tried to find a copy of the book everywhere today but it seems it's out of print....Have you any copies stashed away? I would love to buy one from you if you do! We are leaving 20 January and Sansepulco is now on the list of places to visit! Have loved reading about your time in Japan as well - another place that I am fascinated by but Italy is where my heart lies - not sure why - not an ounce of Italian blood in me but there must be some connection somewhere along the lines - it's not normal to be so obsessed with another culture, is it? Anyway, I would love to talk with you if you get this message and would like to email me!

Best wishes with your return to Melbourne.
